Potty training. What were we thinking? Well, I can answer that question: we were thinking, hey, we’re smart, college educated people. We have training underpants and flushable wipes. We haven’t resorted to googling for crazy advice. We’ve read potty related books to Liam, and we’ve observed him being aware of what’s going on down there, his ability to hold it while running around in his pre-bath nakedness and his interest in flushing the toilet. We can do this! Right?

Well, maybe.

I mean, listen: I don’t think I gave birth to the first child in history who will be completely able to use a toilet but will refuse to learn how through adulthood. I doubt he’ll be wearing a diaper at his college graduation, or his first job interview, or even, honestly, hs first day of kindergarten. Liam is a super smart kid. I know he will be able to figure this out.

Unfortunately, Liam’s parents have no idea what they’re doing and sort of put this off as long as possible while also choosing to jump in without really seeking advice from anybody who has potty trained a kid in recent years.

I’m writing this while Kurt rocks Liam to sleep for his nap. So far, we have gone through (I think) four pairs of underpants, and are on the third pair of regular pants of the day. He’s in a diaper for his nap as he has not managed to pee or poop in his potty. Here’s what we’ve done so far:

We took the potty out and showed him how to sit on it. We gathered some potty-related books (which he then turned into a sstack of all of the books he could carry), and put him in his first pair of underpants. This was actually a pretty huge success—he really enjoys the freedom of movement and comfort of underwear as compared to a diaper. And we’ve sat him on the potty a handful of times—twice immediately following an accident (both times, unbeknownst to us). I just asked Kurt and he confirmed that out of the maybe 6 times we sat him on the potty, only twice was he fairly against trying it.

So, I guess I’m a part of this, now. Here we go.

Current plans:

Email siblings with kids for any advice on potty training
Back to underpants after nap time.
Purchasing a toilet trainer seat that will fit on our toilet to see if he likes that better.
Admitting to downloading an audiobook called “Potty Training Your Child—Guiding Your Little One Towards Toilet Training Success” because I am that helpless.
Listening to said audiobook
